Here the title of this volume has been modified by the ampler designation : Verses attributed, in the tradition of the Pali Canon, to certain eminent sisters (Theri-Bhikkhunis) of the Buddhist Order, and forming the second and smaller portion of the work entitled Thera-theri-gathaoi.e., verses of the Elders, Brethren and Sisters. These poems and verses are found in the Fifth Group of The Second of the Three Pitakas (the Sutta-Pitaka), in the Pali Canon-the Group called Short: Khuddaka-Nikayaoand, which is named after the Four Nikayas, Digha, Majjhimas, Sayyuttas, Anguttiara. In 1883, the poems were edited with academic excellence for the Pali Text Society. It was in its third year. The verses of Theras or Elder Brethren were written by Professor H. Oldenberg. The Theris, which are Elder Women, were edited by Professor R. Pischel of Berlin. There are 264 Brethrenis Gathas and 73 Sisters. The Brethren are the first. Bhikkhus constituted the largest number in the order and were, in terms of standing and position, higher than the Bhikkhunis. It is not a desire to improve on the old order but an accident in the supply of materials that led to the translation of the last part of the book appearing before the original.
