A scientist–philosopher came to be known as a protagonist of societal transformation through scientific development and innovation. Before becoming the eleventh President of India, Dr. Kalam was a scientist-philosopher who worked at ISRO and DRDO. He also served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to India’s Government. Dr. Kalam envisioned India as a developed nation by 2020 in 1995. Dr. Kalam was a visiting professor to many Universities and showed an interest in visiting schools and interfacing with children. He did this throughout his Presidency, and has already met over 1 million children. Children responded enthusiastically to his invitation and sent thousands upon thousands of e-mails and letters. In 1997 Dr. Kalam was awarded India’s highest civil award Bharat Ratna. He was recognized as the face and symbol of 21st-century India. For his contributions to science promotion, he is also awarded the King Charles II Medal. He is the author of nine books. His books are bestsellers over the years.
