The Era of the Individual is the author’s exploration of the most stubborn feature of poststructuralism: the elimination of the human subject. This thinking is rooted in the belief that human beings cannot control or know their basic natures. This belief led to Heidegger’s distrust for a modern capitalist society. Heidegger also briefly allied himself with Hitler’s National Socialist Party. Renaut acknowledges Heidegger’s reservations about modernity, but argues it is wrong to associate modernity with individualism. Renaut distinguishes between subjectivity and individualism, and offers a history to help steer current thinking away form potentially dangerous and reductionist views about humanity.
