This book attempts to explain to an English-speaking reader a complex subject. Given the complexity and mystery surrounding the subject matter, it is not surprising that foreigners to India have struggled to understand Mantra. They concluded that it was a meaningless superstition. This is the familiar argument of lower minds which states “What I don’t understand can have no meaning at all.” Mantra is truely meaningless for those who don’t know its meaning. There are many who do and it is not -superstition.” A close examination of the Mantra-Sastra is worthwhile. It will reveal elements of value for minds that are free from superstition and metaphysical bent (Suksmadarsin). The Tantras of Mantrasastra or Agama contain a profound doctrine that is cleverly, but cautiously, presented. The sub-title of this book states that it is a collection of essays or studies on particular topics in the Mantra-Sastra. This term is often used to describe the Tantra-Sastra. It actually consists of two parts. Chapter 1 deals with the “Word” and Chapters 2-9 deal with the Principles of Sabda’s general doctrine. Chapters 10-21 provide explanations of certain subjects in Tantra-Sastra, which adopts the Mimamsa Sabda doctrine with modifications to conform to its Sakti doctrine. Chapters 12, 28, and 29 discuss the Mantras – Om” and Gayatri.
