This book is a clear and insightful explanation of Hindu belief system and practice. Professor Rambachan blends his devotion and mastery of the relevant texts and traditions to create this book. Rambachan describes worship in both its temple and familial contexts. He explains that worship is a continuous awareness of God in all aspects of life. This awareness increases and expands the religious, moral, and social meanings of life, death, and human action. Dharma moksa, rebirth, and other classic Hindu teachings are presented with elegance and economy of language. Rambachan is particularly attentive to common misconceptions about Hindu teachings. He demonstrates how Hinduism resists determinism and encourages ignorance, joy in life, and compassionate concern for others. For Hindu-Christian dialogue, the last chapter, “A Hindu Looks At Jesus”, will be especially valuable. It is hard to imagine a better introduction to the deep themes of Hinduism.
