Grhyasutras are rules that govern customs, ceremonies, and sacrifices. These are the means by which an Indian’s life is purified. These records include a variety of customs and ways that are associated with conception, birth and name-giving. The Jaimini School Samaveda holds the Grhya Sutra. It is divided into two parts. Part-I begins with information about regular sacrifices where cooked food is offered for the deities. Part-I describes a ceremony to ensure the birth of a male child. It also includes details of the nandimukha, which is the ritual of parting the hair. The ceremony for giving name to the child, ceremony of giving the child his name, ceremony of feeding the child solid food, ceremony of giving the child his first meal, the ceremony of marriage, morning and evening sacrifices, and the offering of first fruits. Part II begins with the rites of sraddha, and continues with descriptions of astakas and funeral ceremonies, libations with water, and the collection and preservation of bones. The detailed description of the house’s rites, the allaying of prodigies, and the recitation of Veda during fasting is next. The householder is then appeased by the malefic planets.
