While I was studying Buddhism at Taisho University in Tokyo, the idea for writing this book was still fresh in my mind. In 1959, I was a India Cultural Scholarship student and joined the Department of Buddhist Studies at Delhi University. I am interested in the Buddhist scriptures written by Pali, Sanskrit and Tibetan. Many names of Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis, or lay-followers, were given to me, naming towns, mountains, rivers, and people that I had never seen. I spent three years in India and visited nearly all Buddhist excavated sites, read books, and spoke with scholars. Every sight, tradition, myth, and superstition in these scriptures is true. One of the most striking scenes was found in Sutta Napata. It was “on the banks of River Mahi/I made a Hut for myself Cow gave milk now/ Heaven Give Us Rain.” The same scene was before my eyes. Lumbini was at the foot of Himalaya Mountain. The scene was exactly the same as the scripture. It has been almost 70 years since then. Even though I travel to India twice or three times a year, I will never forget the first time I visited. This book is the product of epigraphical and literal archaeological studies, including Buddhist scriptures and itihasas as well as Jaina materials.
