Amos Nevo was born and raised in Israel. He currently resides in Jerusalem. He received his degrees from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Middle Eastern Studies as well as Philosophy of Education. For 40 years, he was the Israeli Ministry of Education’s supervisor in both the Arab and Hebrew sector. Advaita Vedanta is his main interest. He first encountered the Naciketa story in the 1960’s at Hebrew University. Later, he wrote a thesis on Kathopanisad’s educational implications. His Ph.D. dissertation was about the Naciketa tale, which he also wrote several articles.
This book is the first comprehensive Sanskrit version, and includes a complete translation into English. This text is made up of multiple manuscripts from the same story branch. It is compared with the printed Sanskrit versions as well as to other manuscripts that are still in manuscript form. Based on the author’s Ph.D. dissertation, the introduction provides a brief analysis of religious philosophic ideas transmitted by the Naciketa tale through the generations. This divides the Naciketa story corpus in three patterns, and leaves ample scope for further research-literary religious philosophic, etc.
