This work combines solid scholarship with significant practical experience. –Amadeo Soleris Buddhist Studies Review 5.1 (1988).
The oldest scriptures of Theravada Buddhism pay much attention to the jhanas. These are high levels of meditation distinguished by strong concentration and purity of thought. Ven. Ven. The author begins with the ethical foundation of meditation, the role and responsibilities of the teacher, as well as the classic subjects of meditation. From there, the author follows the path of meditation to higher levels of realization. Each of the eight stages of jhana is individually examined and explained in relation to each other and the ultimate goal. The author distinguishes between supermundane and mundane jhanas. He points out that while the lower four may lead to psychic abilities and mental powers, they are not required for full enlightenment. They can be developed or ignored as the meditator wishes. The author explains the role of the jhanas in the achievements of an arahat, and clarifies their utility for dedicated meditators.
