Karl H. Potter is a professor of philosophy and South Asian Studies at University of Washington, Seattle. He is also General Editor of Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies.
This volume of the Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies is dedicated to the philosophy and practice of grammarians. This essay provides a summary of the major philosophical ideas found in the grammatical works. Summary of the major sources are provided to give a summary of the ideas in the main sources. This is so that philosophers who cannot read the original sanskrit will be able to get an idea of the arguments and positions that were taken. This text contains chapters on metaphysics, epistemology and sentence meanings, as well as accounts of vedic literature such Yaska’s Nirukta or Panini’s Astadhyayi and Patanjali’s Mahabhasya. A comprehensive bibliography of primary and secondary works on philosophy of grammar is also included. Cumulative Index is also provided. Bhartrhari and Mandanamisra, Kondabhatta, Nagesa were all dealt with in detail.
