Nearly all religious traditions have been developed by mystics and ascetics. Particularly evident is the role of these figures in Hinduism’s Seven Rsis traditions. These seven archetypal seers or sages are shown to be more powerful and important than the gods. Through their asceticism, the Rsis became the progenitors both of the gods and of all orders of creation. The first systematic study of these traditions is Traditions of Seven Rsis. It consists of two parts that are closely connected but separate. The first section is a text-historical analysis of the origins and development of different traditions. The second explores the activities and ideas that are associated with the Seven Rsis. Dr. Mitchiner’s study is based on Sanskrit, but he also uses Tamil, tribal, and other non-Indian sources. He then outlines the main traditions associated to the Seven Rsis, and trace the underlying themes within those traditions, especially the creative role of these ascetic characters. This work contains a lot of original literary material that was not previously translated. It is both a sourcebook for the Rsi traditions as well as a study of their historical development, symbolic meaning, and interconnectedness. This demonstrates above all the dynamically creative role played by the ascetic/mystic within Hinduism.
