Harvey, P. Alper served as Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University between 1974 and 1987. His primary interest as a Sanskritist was South Asia’s religious traditions. He was the editor of the series Saiva Traditions of Kashmir. Professor Alper, who had completed the editorial work for the current volume, suddenly died on April 4, 1987.
Understanding Mantras examines the nature, function, and significance of mantras within hindu tradition. It examines the Vedic age and the role of mantras in Vaisnavism, Saivism, and Tantra. Alper gives a brief overview of the major issues in Western scholarship regarding the nature mantras. He also offers a helpful and suggested framework for solving them. These essays offer insight into Indian mantric tradition as well as western attempts at understanding it. They also address the issue of whether mantras should be considered instances of language. Professor Alper’s comprehensive bibliographical, methodological and list is of immense value. The essay contains more than 1600 items. It places mantra in context with Indian society, culture and history. This bibliography will be a valuable tool for future research and can be used as a guide.
