XUANZANG (600 664) has been one of the most prominent figures in the history scholastic Chinese Buddhism. Xuanzang presents Vasubandhu s Tri??ka in the context of Indian commentaries. He also discusses the background of Yogacara works like the Yogacarabhumi Dasabhumi, bhidharmasamuccaya, and Yogacarabhumi in the Cheng weishi lun. After studying for fifteen years in India, Xuanzang had brought the texts and many others back to China in 645. He translated seventy-five more works and was the most prolific of all Chinese translators. By completing the work Bodhiruci/Ratnamati had begun, he was also the first person to make the Yogacara systematically accessible in China. VASUBANDHU was born ca. 350 430 A.D. was born in Puru?apura, Gandhara. He is next to his halfbrother Asa?ga. The Yogacara school’s most prominent personage is 330 405 A.D. He was originally from the Sravakayana school, the Sarvastivadins. His reputation for writing numerous treatises had earned him a place in the Mahayana. Asanga won him over to the Mahayana sometime in his 40s. Vasubandhu is considered the greatest systematizer of Buddhism. He is also one of six great ornaments and six great commentators on the Buddha’s teachings.
