The Period of Scholasticism is the name given to the fourth and fifth volumes of Global History of Philosophy. This designation emphasizes that the scholastic method, with its emphasis on thesis and antithesis, became universal throughout Eurasia. However, scholasticism shouldn’t be interpreted as the juggling of straw men arguments, but rather as a challenge to systematic, consistent synthesis even in our own time. All “older traditions” must be interpreted in light of “modern circumstances” as that is what the Eurasian scholars of the past centuries were doing. These major developments include “Monism in Many Moods” in the ninth century and “Exfoliation and Elaboration of seminal systems in tenth and 11th centuries, which unite the time of “Great Summas”, in the twelfth and 13th centuries. This was the time when philosophy and theology created a highly developed technique for balancing arguments, refutations, counter-arguments, and counter-refutations. As is true of the whole series, these volumes are a new way of exploring the accumulative wisdom of mankind and in the process explode many of the ethnocentric stereotypes which still hinder interculturalcommunications and world peace through intercultural understanding.
