Swami Veda Bharati was born in 1933 to a Sanskrit-speaking household. He began teaching Yoga-Sutras from Patanjali at age nine in 1942. A number of articles in Hindi published in 1946 extolled the child prodigy’s extraordinary knowledge of the Vedas. He was then invited to speak to crowds of thousands and colleges and universities across north India. He traveled the world giving talks and establishing meditation centers, starting in February 1947. He has recorded over 4,000 hours of lectures on history, philosophy, and meditation practices. He also wrote eighteen books, including a commentary of 1,500 pages on the Yoga-Sutras’ first two pads. This is a meticulous and scholarly work.
The first volume of the Commentary of the Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali (samadhi-pada), was published in 1984. It can be obtained from the HImalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy Route I, Box 400 Honesdale PA 18431, USA. It received high praise for its rare authenticity. It is based on 13 Sanskrit commentaries. These comments were synthesized and analyzed in light of oral tradition and personal experience with the master-disciple lineage. According to the author, without this personal experience, much of the terminology in the Yoga-sutras will remain unclear and explanations based on purely scholastic grounds may be incomplete. The present volume on Sadhana-pada has a further value by including the study of unpublished manuscripts and published Sanskrit commentaries. The work is enhanced by seven lengthy appendices. These appendices allow for further research and can be used to create independent theses. The author ensures that the works of previous commentators are examined in light of how the Sutras were taught in the Himalayan caves to those who follow the various methods and are initiated into them.
