While widely known as a seminal commentary about the Samkhyakarika (Isvarakrsna) Samkhyakarika, Yuktidipika’s first edition (YD), was only made public in 1938 by Pulinbehari Chakravarti. However, dissatisfaction with the MS-based edition grew over the next period and V. Raghavan, a scholar, attempted to rid the YD text of all its “corruptions” in several articles published in Annals of Oriental Research (University of Madras 54-59). R.C. was born in 1967. R.C. Pandeya published Yuktidipika in 1967. It was based on two manuscripts. Two more editions were issued in 1970 and 1996. Even though there was no additional manuscript material, the 1996 edition by Kedara Nth Tripathi provided a better text that Pandeya’s. 1998 saw the German edition. It was critically edited by A. Wezler, and S. Motegi. This edition was written in Roman script, making it difficult for many Indians and others to access. It also had some limitations and flaws. A singular feature of critical edition is that, besides being based, unlike most previous editions, on five MSS, it simultaneously provides almost all the variant readings, whether embodied in Raghvanis corrections/emendations or effected by earlier editions, including the German one. In this way, the reader has the ability to choose from any of the given readings, in particular contexts, if he is unsure about the chosen reading. In ‘philosophical introductioni, the editor deals with certain principal themes of the Samkhya on the basis of the Yuktidipika, occasionally also alluding to the views/interpretations of other Samkhya texts.
