National Icons Of Modern India
The present volume contains essays that cover random thoughts on some icons of the Indian national movement, primarily under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. The articles were written from time to time for presentation or publication without any plan or priority. As such, many stalwarts are left out or dealt with succinctly. My effort will be to fill up the gap in the next volume. Nationalism is a peculiarly modern phenomenon. It may be defined as a state of mind in which the individual feels that everyone owes a supreme secular loyalty to the nation state. Nationalism, translated into world politics, implies the identification of the State or Nation with the people, or at least the desirability of determining the extent of the State, according to ethnographic principles. Throughout history, men have been attached to their native soil, to the traditions of their parents, and to established territorial authorities. Nationalism stressed the parochial, the differences within and the national individualities. Those tendencies became more pronounced as nationalism developed.
