Naxalism and Quality of Life

Naxalism is the biggest worry of the nation today and it has been debated time and again in the political circles, in order to combat with it. The origin of Naxalites dates back to 1967 in Naxalbari, a village in West Bengal. In Bihar Ekwari a village in Bhojpur district is known as Naxalbari of Bihar. Out of 38 districts of Bihar thirty two districts are Naxal affected. In this study four districts of Bihar namely, Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur and Rohtas had been covered. The purpose of this study was to compare the five domains of quality of life (home, health, social, marital and emotional) of aged people residing in high, low and non-Naxal affected regions. And also to assess the psychosocial problems like, social support, harmony, development, infrastructure, conflict & law and order in the regions. The Naxalites have adopted the tactic of killing abducting top bureaucrats. ministers, police personnels and civilians also. They target schools, hospitals, police stations and block road and rail traffics to fulfill their demands. The Naxal activities have marginalized the pace of development and put the nation beyond scintillating, All these adversely affected the development work of the locality started by government. That peace & harmony is essential for development. Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding. So it is not the gun but the mind and heart that will make victorious to peace keepers and makers. Naxals demand for share in political power, land, employment, dignity, prosperity and place in the society. The findings of the study would be helpful for planners, policy makers, bureaucrats, social workers & NGOs who want to bring the Naxals in mainstream of life for peace, harmony, development and overall for better quality of life.
