Patna Through The Ages Glimpses of History, Society & Economy

Hardly any other town has figured so prominently and for so long in the history of our large and ancient country as did the great Magadhan capital-Pataliputra of the ancient, Patna of the medieval and Azimabad of the early modern times. A modest attempt has been made here to present to the general readers some glimpses of the history. society, culture and economy of this great town. The articles, contributed by some eminent teachers of the Patna University who in addition to their areas of specialisation have a close interest in the subject, are arranged in three sections covering the ancient, medieval and modern periods The articles in Section I present an account of Pataliputra as viewed by some early perceptive foreign visitors, as a flourishing town in the Kushan Empire and as a case- study in the context of growth and decline of urbanisation and of town- planning; those in Section II present a general view of the town as a politico- administrative, commercial and intellectual centre and examine the fascinating background of the etymology of place-names, and those in Section III examine aspects of its social, cultural, educational and economic history and its role during a phase of the Freedom Movement-all based on archaeological and, some unnoticed, literary sources.
