The Pasis Of Bihar A Socio-economic Study

This study is on the Pasis, one of the Subaltern communities in Bihar. They were traditionally connected with toddy tapping and toddy selling. Like other Dalit castes they belong to one of the poorest and lowest castes in Bihar. Due to modernization and development, caste system has undergone many changes. Education, migration, political mobilisation and social mobility have brought changes in Dalit life. This book presents a realistic picture of their present-day life and is based on a field survey done in different parts of the state. The book tries to examine changes in Pasi community's socio-economic situation, inter-caste relation, political mobilisation and cultural representation. The author has tried to focus on how caste was perceived during the colonial rule and how the whole exercise of ethnographic studies. census process, administrative changes, and educational system was based on complex and biased understanding of Hinduism and caste system. Critique of the colonial knowledge formation process is essential in moving forward to get a better understanding of any caste group. The attempt is to reconstruct the actual history, culture, identity and the present livelihood struggles of the Pasis of Bihar. Besides attempting to understand the historical, cultural, political, religious and economic condition of the Pasis, it also discusses how their livelihood has been negatively affected due to the prohibition law by the Government id Hilar in 2016 under which their Traditional occupation of toddy tapping and sale was banned for some time and later permitted with conditions in the wake of which Pasis had to suffer harassment and imprisonment.
